TUFFAK® AR2 Monolithic Polycarbonate & TUFFAK® HYGARD® Polycarbonate Laminates vs. Glass

TUFFAK® AR2 — a premium monolithic polycarbonate sheet with a factory hardcoat on both faces for superior mar/chemical resistance, easy cleaning, and clear optics.

TUFFAK® HYGARD® — laminated polycarbonate constructions (PC/PC or hybrid interlayers) engineered for forced-entry, containment, ballistic, and blast performance at a fraction of the weight of glass laminates.

Both are supplied and supported exclusively by GAT Technologies.

Glass: hard surface but brittle—can shatter abruptly into sharp fragments (annealed) or acutely lose integrity (tempered/laminated) after impact; heavy and difficult to replace.
TUFFAK® AR2: ~250 times tougher than annealed glass; shrugs off accidental impacts and public-area abuse while staying clear and intact.
TUFFAK® HYGARD®: multi-ply design absorbs energy, resists repeated strikes, and controls spall, creating a time delay against intrusion. For ballistic/blast threats, HYGARD® reaches target levels at lower weight and thickness than comparable glass laminates.
Impact/Abuse: TUFFAK® (AR2 / HYGARD®) vs. glass
Weight: Polycarbonate is 50% lighter → easier handling, smaller lifting gear, faster installs
Abrasion resistance: Glass surface is harder; AR2 hardcoat narrows the gap for daily cleaning/maintenance
Deflection: Glass is stiffer; polycarbonate needs predetermined edge/frame engagement and thickness to control deflection; all supporting materials available on request
Thermal shock: Polycarbonate is resilient; glass can crack under rapid temperature swings
Fabrication: Polycarbonate cuts, drills, machines, and cold-bends on site; glass must be factory-processed (no post-drilling or cold bending)
Failure mode: Glass can fail catastrophically; polycarbonate absorbs energy and typically stays in place

Brittle failure & spall: impacts can create dangerous shards or ejected fragments, risking injury and rapid loss of security.

Heavy & slow to replace: glass weight demands more labour/equipment; tempered/laminated replacements have longer lead times and are not field-modifiable.
No on-site drilling/changes: any late penetrations or hardware changes require new glass, not a quick rework.
Thermal & pressure shock: rapid temperature swings or blast overpressure can crack/shatter glass.
Blast hazard: broken glass becomes high-velocity shrapnel; laminated glass helps but adds mass and thickness.
Limited multi-hit resilience: repeated strikes degrade glass performance quickly compared with HYGARD® multi-hit capability.

Select TUFFAK® AR2 for clear, tough, easy-to-clean monolithic glazing in:

Corrections & mental health: windows, door vision panels
Transit & public infrastructure: barriers, kiosks, wayfinding covers
Healthcare & cleanrooms: frequently disinfected windows/guards
Mining & industrial: machine guards, vehicle cab glazing
Education & sport: spectator shields, lab partitions

Why AR2? The factory hardcoat boosts mar/chemical resistance, minimizes “micro-scuffing,” and extends optical life versus uncoated polycarbonate.

Choose HYGARD® when your spec calls for intruder resistance, containment, ballistic, or blast:
Corrections, justice, government, mental health: counters, reception, vision panels
Retail cash handling: teller barriers, secure enclosures
Critical infrastructure & control rooms: forced-entry resistant partitions
Vehicles, kiosks & mobile assets: where low weight and anti-spall matter
What HYGARD® adds: engineered energy absorption, spall control, and residual capacity after impact—at significantly lower weight than glass laminates meeting the same threat level.
Ballistic: meets specified UL/EN/NIJ levels at reduced mass/thickness vs. all-glass solutions, with safe-side spall control.
Blast: flexes to absorb shock and retain fragments, cutting injury risk—ideal for embassies, airports, defence, and critical infrastructure.
Yes.
Uncoated PC: superb impact strength but marks more easily and can haze with poor cleaning.
TUFFAK® AR2: factory hard-coated both sides for far higher Taber abrasion, chemical resistance, and cleanability.
TUFFAK® HYGARD®: outer plies use Tuffak AR2 hardcoating technology
Impact: Polycarbonate far higher than glass
Weight: Polycarbonate is half the mass of glass
Optics: Premium TUFFAK® delivers high transmission with low haze; manage deflection via product thickness and frame design
Abrasion: AR2 = serviceable public-facing durability; glass surface remains harder, but AR2 greatly outperforms uncoated PC in daily use
Thermal: Polycarbonate tolerates wide swings; glass performance varies by type/coating
Yes:
Safety glazing: AS/NZS 2208, ANSI Z97.1, EN 12600
Forced-entry / containment / ballistic: UL 752, EN 356 / EN 1063, ASTM F1915, NIJ 0108.01
Blast: ASTM F1642, ISO 16933
Optics/abrasion: ASTM D1003, ASTM D1044
TUFFAK® AR2: Fewer breakages, faster installs, simpler cleaning for less downtime and lower life-cycle cost.
TUFFAK® HYGARD®: security/ballistic/blast performance at lower weight, often enabling lighter frames/hardware; offsets material cost.
Glass: sometimes lower upfront in low-risk zones, but heavier, slower, costlier to replace and far less forgiving in multi-hit or abuse scenarios.
Deflection/expansion: design TUFFAK® for thermal movement, gasket support, no point loads
Cold-bending: feasible with minimum radius for TUFFAK®; never for glass
Drilling/penetrations: TUFFAK® is field-workable; glass changes require factory remake
Edges: TUFFAK® edges can be CNC-finished/polished
Surface protection: consider our GATGARD® NuLife 600 anti-graffiti film on public-facing TUFFAK® or HYGARD®
TUFFAK® AR2 / TUFFAK® HYGARD®
Blow off grit; clean with mild soapy water or approved plastic cleaners + soft microfibre
Avoid abrasive pads, strong alkalis, aromatics/ketones, and dry-wiping dusty panels
Rinse and pat dry to preserve low haze
Modern UV-stabilised TUFFAK® AR2 and TUFFAK® HYGARD® deliver excellent weathering. Specify the correct outdoor grade/coat and follow our cleaning guide for long, clear service life.
TUFFAK® AR2: common gauges from 1–12.7 mm (others on request); full sheets and CNC cut-to-size
TUFFAK® HYGARD®: thickness driven by threat level; sized to opening, loads, and certification target
Application engineering: spans, loads, deflection, threat mapping
Specification support: translate performance needs for compliant TUFFAK® build
Fabrication: CNC kits, drilling, countersinking, edge finishing, hardware advice
Documentation: install guides, cleaning/maintenance plans, warranty coordination
Project location & code drivers (AS/NZS, NCC)
Opening sizes, support conditions, wind/human-impact categories
Performance target: safety / forced-entry / ballistic / blast (and test framework)
Preference: TUFFAK® AR2 or TUFFAK® HYGARD®
TUFFAK® AR2: tough, light, clear monolithic glazing with a work-ready hardcoat: ideal for public, healthcare, mining, industrial, education.
TUFFAK® HYGARD®: engineered security/ballistic/blast with anti-spall at half the weight of glass laminates: ideal where threat performance and multi-hit resilience matter.
Glass: hard surface but brittle, heavy, slow to replace, and poor in multi-hit/blast scenarios.
Speak with GAT Technologies to match your risk level, spans, optics, and budget to a TUFFAK® configuration that outperforms glass where it counts.
