FAQs

Mining & On-Site Transportation — FAQ (GAT Technologies)

Glazing & surface solutions that survive impact, dust, vibration, cleanin and keep fleets moving

This FAQ brings together common mining and transportation pain points (haul trucks, dozers, loaders, light vehicles, site buses/shuttles, station facilities) and maps them to GAT Technologies’ solutions:

FRAS-rated SciCron® ESD (static-dissipative / anti-static) PC350 polycarbonate sheets for underground glazing and guards
SciCron® ESD ABF300 Retrofit Film (apply to existing glass/plastic to add permanent ESD/static control)
TUFFAK® HYGARD® laminated polycarbonate for extreme/multi-hit impact and blast resistance
TUFFAK® AR2 hard-coated monolithic polycarbonate for daily-abuse windows and guards
ClearPlex® sacrificial glazing protection film for abrasion, pitting and wiper wear

Quick recap

SciCron® ESD (FRAS) — permanent static-dissipative sheets for underground; SciCron® ESD Retrofit Film to add ESD to existing glazing.
TUFFAK® HYGARD® — multi-hit / anti-spall / blast-capable laminates for the toughest windows.
TUFFAK® AR2 — hard-coated monolithic polycarbonate for daily-abuse, high-cleaning zones.
ClearPlex® — sacrificial outer film that preserves clarity and extends service life.

Talk to GAT Technologies—we’ll map your pain points to the right combination of TUFFAK®, SciCron®, and ClearPlex® so your equipment stays clear, compliant, and in service.

Pain points across mines and transport: shattered panes, heavy panels and slow change-outs, glare and poor visibility, impact and repeated strikes.

GAT outcome: Polycarbonate systems (TUFFAK® AR2/HYGARD®) are orders of magnitude tougher than glass, 50% lighter, and available with hardcoats and ESD control to stay clear under real-world abuse and cleaning.

FRAS = Fire Retardant and Anti-Static. Underground environments require materials that won’t propagate flame and control static.

SciCron® ESD (FRAS grades) are clear sheets with a permanent, humidity-independent static-dissipative coating (typ. 10⁶–10⁹ Ω/sq).

Use cases: machine guards, control panel windows, inspection panes, scanner covers.

Benefits: reduces dust cling, supports electronics safety, hard-coat durability for frequent cleaning, and documentation for FRAS compliance.

Yes. Specify SciCron® ABF300 ESD Retrofit Film. It laminates to existing glass or plastic (with optically-clear adhesive) to add permanent static-dissipative performance and cleaner-staying surfaces without replacing the pane. Ideal for operator screens, kiosks, validator windows, bus driver screens and control rooms where dust attraction and static are problems.

TUFFAK® HYGARD® is a laminated polycarbonate (PC/PC or hybrid) engineered for multi-hit energy absorption, anti-spall safe-side performance, and blast options.

Mining: dozer/loader/haul-truck fronts and doors, crusher & plant windows exposed to fragments.

Transport on-site/public: high-risk ticketing/bus driver barriers, repeatedly struck station glazing.

Why it is a better altwernative: survives repeated impacts that sideline glass, weighs less than glass laminates (faster/safer swaps), and keeps the safe side free of spall.

TUFFAK® AR2 is monolithic polycarbonate with a factory hard-coat on both faces for abrasion and chemical resistance.

Use AR2 for side/rear/roof windows, depot and vehicle guards, shelters, and driver partitions where the daily cycle is dust → wipe → disinfect → wipe. The hard-coat keeps the surface protected and optics clear when you follow approved cleaning.

ClearPlex® is a sacrificial, optically clear exterior film that takes the brunt of sand/dust abrasion, stone pitting, and wiper wear. Replace the film and not the expensive pane when it’s worn. Perfect for haul-truck/dozer fronts, graders, light-vehicle windscreens (site), and fixed-plant windows facing conveyors or blast zones.

Rinse grit first (never dry-wipe).
Use mild soapy water or approved plastic cleaners with soft microfibre.
Avoid abrasive pads, strong alkalis, aromatics/ketones.
Maintain wiper blades/gaskets; embedded grit is the enemy.
We include an approved cleaners list and a maintenance card with orders.

We size glazing by span, edge engagement, stand-off, impact/blast risk, target deflection and, for underground, FRAS needs. Provide your opening, frame/gasket details, and duty, and we’ll return a TUFFAK® HYGARD® / AR2 / SciCron® ESD spec with deflection checks and, where applicable, ClearPlex® or retrofit film recommendations.

FRAS (underground): we supply FRAS documentation for nominated SciCron® ESD grades.
Impact / multi-hit / blast: HYGARD® constructions available with test reports/statements
SDS / install guides / cleaning manuals available on request
Fewer breakages means less downtime and fewer emergency call-outs
Lighter panels means faster, safer handling and change-outs
Hard-coat durability + ClearPlex® menas longer optical life
