Exolon Group

Exolon Group – A New Chapter in Polycarbonate Excellence

The Exolon Group stands today as one of Europe’s leading innovators in the field of polycarbonate sheet extrusion, but its story is rooted in decades of proven performance and heritage. In 2020, the Exolon Group was formed through the acquisition of the Covestro polycarbonate extrusion business, marking a new era of focus, investment, and innovation in high-performance thermoplastic sheet solutions.

For decades, Covestro (and previously Bayer MaterialScience) set the global benchmark for polycarbonate extrusion technology with its renowned Makrolon® product line. Recognised for exceptional strength, impact resistance, optical clarity, and specialised performance, Makrolon sheets earned a reputation as the material of choice for demanding applications across architecture, security, transportation, and acoustics.

When Exolon Group took ownership of Covestro’s extrusion business, it did more than continue this legacy; it gave it a dedicated platform for growth and development, driven by a sole focus on high-quality sheet solutions for the European and global markets.

As part of this transition, two flagship products were rebranded to align with the new Exolon identity while retaining their proven performance and technical specifications:

  • Makrolon® AR → Exolon® AR
A premium-grade polycarbonate sheet with an advanced abrasion-resistant coating that provides glass-like surface durability while maintaining the impact resistance and lightweight strength of polycarbonate. Exolon AR continues to be the trusted solution for security glazing, public infrastructure, transportation, and architectural projects where scratch resistance and long service life are essential.
  • Makrolon® Silent Sound → Exolon® Silent Sound
A highly engineered polycarbonate sheet designed for noise reduction and acoustic control in transparent sound barrier applications. Combining exceptional clarity, UV stability, and proven acoustic insulation properties, Exolon Silent Sound remains the material of choice for motorway barriers, railway infrastructure, and urban noise management projects. Exolon® Silent Sound offers best in class transparent noise protection for soundwall applications that require properties such as being self-extinguishing, virtually unbreakable and a 50 year service life.

The rebranding from Makrolon® to Exolon® reflects a strategic decision to strengthen the group’s identity, while customers can be assured that the products themselves remain unchanged manufactured to the same high-quality standards, in the same facilities, by the same team of experts.

Today, the Exolon Group continues to expand its portfolio of innovative polycarbonate and thermoplastic sheet solutions, with a commitment to sustainability, customer service, and technical excellence. By combining decades of experience with a renewed focus under the Exolon name, the company is perfectly positioned to lead the future of polycarbonate sheet innovation in Europe and beyond.

Exolon® Silent Sound is specified in noise barrier and acoustic glazing applications, including:

  • Highway and motorway sound barriers
  • Railway and tram line acoustic protection
  • Urban infrastructure projects – reducing noise in residential and commercial zones
  • Industrial noise enclosures – protecting nearby communities from plant or machinery noise
  • Public spaces – where sound insulation and safety are equally important

Exolon® Silent Sound is designed for long-term outdoor exposure, with UV-stable coatings that resist yellowing, haze, and degradation. It maintains both its acoustic performance and optical clarity even after years of installation, making it a sustainable choice for large-scale infrastructure projects.

  • Certified acoustic performance - meeting international standards
  • Unbreakable durability – safer and stronger than glass or acrylic
  • Lightweight efficiency – easier to design, transport, and install
  • Low maintenance with long-term resistance to weather and wear
